The Stay in School Program is a highly
successful collaborative effort between the
District Attorney’s Office, the Protective
Services for Children Justice of the Peace Court
Family Service Program, four Justice of the
Peace Courts and 11 school districts designed to
combat the pervasive problem of truancy.
The Stay in School Program has reduced the total
number of truancy hearings in the Justice of the
Peace Courts to significantly less than 80% of
those students that could be filed on and has
produced referrals to the Juvenile District
Court of less than 1%.
The Stay in School program was developed with
the goals of preventing a student from missing
school, providing a more effective sanction for
a child who refuses to attend school, and
intervening in the lives of families before the
children enter the Juvenile Justice System.
Clearly, these goals have been overwhelmingly
achieved and continued success is expected. .
